January 1997 - February 1998
DragonSpan
The original concept for what would eventually become Spyro the Dragon. Several design documents detailing the original plans for this game have been released.
Development beginnings and concept art
Early development features, test maps, and cut concepts, revealed through press materials and interviews with the developers.
Colour and animation tests
A VHS tape dated to early 1997, demonstrating several early design concepts for the titular dragon.
Early press documents
Press documents from the game's early stages, describing features that were never implemented in any form.
March 1998 - April 1998
Project Pete's reveal
The first public reveals of Spyro the Dragon, and what was shown behind closed doors.
Silver dragons and SCEE B-roll
The earliest known build(s) of the game, from a point of development where dragon statues were silver and Spyro exited levels through portals.
Gold dragons and boatmen
A slight progression from the previous build, shown in some exclusive previews to a select handful of journalists. Dragon statues are now gold!
