In late 1996, following the release of Insomniac's first title, "Disruptor", each Insomniac developer was tasked with developing a pitch for their next title. The pitch that would ultimately be selected would be Craig Stitt's "DragonSpan", a third person action game in which you control a dragon over its entire lifespan of several thousand years. Many of the concepts for how this would work and what the premise of the game would be were still not fully pinned down in any of these early stages.
Ultimately, producer Mark Cerny would suggest keeping the dragon the same age across the game, and keeping the game family-friendly to appeal to a wider audience. This game would soon thereafter become a platforming concept with the working title "Project Pete", the titular Pete eventually becoming Spyro the Dragon.
